I was reading about how Samuel Jackson used to stutter and how he overcame it on set of a movie. He said he would just cuss when he felt a stutter come on during script reading. He also said he doesn’t stutter when he plays characters. I read that and applied his concept to a school talent show (which I did some standup comedy) and the principal yanked me of stage 3 minutes in. She said i was cussing on stage. I went through stuttering phases of hitting my upper to get words out as a kid, then to cussing in the military ( Which was great in the Navy since every other word is fuck)then to saying um and other fillers up to 3 times. Im 31 now and still do amateur stand up as a hobby. The only benefit i had from stuttering is that it made me a good listener, problem solver, and pay attention to non verbal cues. Which helps in some situations. I think practice and having a wide vocabulary have helped me be a little better. I still kick myself when i stutter and someone notices it. Its not easy but I’ve been kicking this long and plan to keep on keeping on.
