In a face to face conversation the most effective method I've come up with is to look away from the persons face for a split second. Focus on something in the background. Say the name or short description of the thing you are focusing on in my head while taking a breath. Usually that's enough for me to distract myself from almost or actually losing control, regain my composure and reset.
