My speech therapist actually taught me something in the lines of this, although in his words it was emphasizing on the first vowel of the word. So as you said: s-Even. The reason why it works might be because you don't waste any "exhale air" on the consonant. Blocks are less likely to form when you are in the middle of an exhale. Great technique!
