I just moved from College Station! I attended Blinn for three years, and just transferred to Texas State University in San Marcos. I was planning on going to A&M but I had some bad times and my grades suffered. College Station is a nice town though - you'll love it! As far as speaking in public, at Blinn some of the professors still made you introduce yourself in front of class, but at A&M you probably won't have to because most of the freshman/sophomore level classes have 80+ students. I know that most majors require a public speaking class, I have not taken it yet - I have been putting it off. I plan on taking it in the summer - it will be shorter and won't affect my other classes. Also, for my major there were two classes that could fulfill that communication requirement - one was public speaking and the other was intro to comm. - they both still require public speaking but into to comm. is less focused on it (from what I hear). I know I did not attend A&M, but for three years I planned all my classes based from their degree requirements. Also, I recommend taking some classes at Blinn - they are a lot cheaper and the classes are smaller (aside from the fact that in smaller classes you might have to speak more, I learnt a lot better in them).
