Should I send my son to therapy? I’ve stuttered my whole life, and it’s seriously impacted every aspect of it. My stutter isn’t very severe, but I still let it control everything I did and said. I didn’t think it was genetic, but my son is 11 and has developed a stutter that seems to have worsened the last couple years. I’ve alerted his teachers in every grade since 1st grade and said I wanted him seen by the speech therapist, but she always comes back and says his speech is fine and she sees no reason for therapy. For the longest time I wasn’t sure whether to talk to him about it, because I didn’t want to draw attention to it and make it seem like a big deal...but I finally did and he’s aware of it but says it doesn’t bother him at all. I don’t know whether I should look into therapy anyway? I’ve heard the earlier the start the better and he’s already 11. I’m worried that it will eventually bother him in the future. Also concerned because I don’t think insurance will cover it and I’m a single parent struggling to make ends meet as it is. Does anyone have any experience with this?
