Are you asking about social settings vs. professional setting? Because I have been shocked and disgusted about the way I continue to be treated. For example, I called in to the VA recently and tried to get a COVID appointment. The triage nurse asked me for my SSN… Which has several “S” numbers (I am currently fighting the “S”). I stuttered and the triage nurse repeatedly cackled at my difficulty. It pissed me off. So, I called a meeting with the chief nurse and the hospital administrator and that triage nurse and asked her if she knew my medical history? I told them that I don’t choose to speak this way and that dignity had better be the coin of the realm in all corners of this place. Everyone was silent and barely made eye contact. They know they f#cked up, but it was clear that they just never had anyone who had the ability I have to call a meeting and dress them down in their own fiefdom. I am a very well educated and accomplished person, with experiences that others do not have. I have participated in real world incidents that have been made in to two Hollywood movies and three best selling books. Still, I feel that I constantly have to fight against being essentialized and discounted in virtually every professional circle I have been in. Thankfully, no one has ever succeeded in breaking my spirit. The Gods may have taken my tongue, but they left me the will, and stuttering or not, I will fight any motherf#cker that tries to step on my life or the life of any other person with a stutter.
