US Public School System Expectations

US Public School System Expectations Hey all, My kid who will be registering for kindergarten this year, his first institutional experience due to living in a pre-k desert, has stuttered since he could form a sentence. He’s an amazing, bright kid who has no troubles at home with us. But even with extended family, he is sometimes subjected to teasing because they forget to be more careful with him. He has a speech therapist but he doesn’t see her regularly because she thinks that because we have constructed a really positive and comfortable environment for him at home that we should just roll with his stuttering and accept it as “his way” of communicating. I think part of it is also her and her boss cannot figure him out because he has a really wide and varied pattern of disfluencies and sometimes they’re pretty mild. Which I’m glad of but of course he was in a mild pattern last he saw her. Everything being new with school, I am worried he will be uncomfortable and either stutter a lot or just refuse to speak, which he does especially when he’s experiencing a lot of blocks. Most people also think he’s just ignoring them when this happens. I don’t blame them— it appears that way but as his mom I absolutely can tell the difference. Does anyone have any advice? How do I broach the subject with the school? We try our best not to draw his attention to his stutter because his therapist instructed us that it would make it worse. Any tips on having a stutterer in a public US school in general? Both from an administrative and a social perspective? I think I will also schedule a therapy appointment prior to his entry evaluation.
