Hey Somack. It really is a hard thing. One not many can overcome just through sheer will. I will tell you, what's made the biggest difference for me and other people I know, is meeting other people who stutter and having that network of support. The best way i've gotten this is through the NSA (National Stuttering Association) here in America. The Annual conference in particular (which is happening next week). The thing i've learned is you can't really just try to feel better about it or try to not let it bother you as much. If gaining confidence was as easy as focusing on it then we'd all have it. What I had to do was take action; do things. A buddy of mine made a big decision and turned his goal of action into a project that got national coverage: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/04/24/stuttering-project-educate-awareness/2108761/. Now, i'm not saying you need to just jump into a bunch of fearful situations and overexpose yourself. I wouldnt recommend that most likely. But maybe you could start just trying to get yourself more out there. Check and see if there is a local NSA support group near you. Join some of the groups online like Stuttersocial, where people from around the world jump on to talk with other people who stutter and understand them. One of my favorite for when im just on my own is to listen to www.stuttertalk.com. It's a really terrific podcast and these people get it. Highly recommended and I can recommend certain episodes if you want to PM me. Lastly, I dont know what your situation is now, but the NSA annual conference is probably the ultimate resource there is. This year's conference starts next wednesday so I dont know if you can still get a flight and a room, but you can always the office and ask, if you have the means. When all else fails, there are some pretty good books out there written by stutterers on stuttering that can pick you up when you get down. Thanks for the post and remember, baby steps really are the way.
