Many SLPs simply don’t understand the science behind stuttering. They don’t understand that many cases of stuttering, especially the more severe cases, have a large physiological/neurological component, which is why no amount of speech therapy works for certain stutterers. I’m one of these people - speech therapy has never worked for me, so I don’t even bother anymore. It’s just a waste of time and money to me. Many SLPs are misinformed, thinking that if a stutterer simply tries hard enough, they can “cure” their stuttering. That’s about as absurd as claiming a deaf or blind person can “cure” their condition if only they “tried hard enough”. The SLPs I saw tried to throw the blame on me telling me it was all my fault I stutter, as if it was something I had control over. Maybe deep down they know that there are some of us who don’t benefit from speech therapy, but continue to prop up this victim-blaming framework because speech therapy is their bread and butter.
